HA3 Task 3 – Graphic Types

Pixel Art

Pixel art is a form of digital art, created through the use of raster graphics software, where images are edited on the pixel level. Graphics in most old (or relatively limited) computer, console, graphing calculator and mobile phone video games are mostly pixel art.

Pixel art can be divided in to two subcategories known as isometric and non-isometric.
Isometric pixel art is drawn or created in way in which it gives the illusion that the object is three dimensional.

There are many games that have been created using pixel art for example Mario, Zelda and Pac Man and in some rare cases you can even create pixel art in a game such as Minecraft.

Three dimensional pixel art also created in Minecraft.

Concept Art

Concept art is a form of illustration used to convey an idea for use in films, video games, animation, or comic books before it is put into the final product. Concept art is also referred to as visual development and/or concept design.

Concept art can involve the creation of the setting, characters or objects - tools weapons etc.

Texture Art

Texture, another element of art, is used to describe either the way a three-dimensional work actually feels when touched, or the visual "feel" of a two-dimensional work.

Take rocks, for example. A real, 3-D rock might feel rough or smooth, and definitely feels hard when touched or picked up. A texture artist, depicting a rock, would create the illusions of these qualities through use of colour, line, shape, etc.

Background Graphics

these are the graphics used in the background of a game. These help to stage a level or assist the gameplay. However the background graphic do not interfere with the game characters or objects.

Background graphics are more important than people think as they help in assisting the look of the game during gameplay to give it a more pleasing look. They help create the scene of a game and often add that last line of detail which pulls the game together. The scrolling background graphics for Mario - That is definitely essential, as the game wouldn't be as good without it

Print Media Art

Print media are basically posters and box art, which are used for advertising and drawing in an audience for a specific game.

Many company's design theirs so that it is eye catching and appealing if someone wishes for their game to interest people enough to purchase. Not necessarily bright and vivid, but something that could be iconic and memorable. The example for this shown, is a HUGE print for the Elder Scrolls game, Skyrim.
